Powdershoot withe the beautiful Juna Budie

When a buddy photographer of mine (Joey Meijer from Allround Photography) asked me to help him with a studioshoot of course I said yes. You can always help each other forward.

He would like to do a powder-shoot, “that would be awesome”, he said. We agreed Joey would fix 10 kg of (baking) flower. I have a studio and would arrange for a model.

Since this was the first time Joey used studiolighting a showed him how to measure the light using a Elinchrome 478 Lightmaster to meter everything out. We agreed although the light was spot on perfect it was also a bit boring.
It could be a bit more dramatic for this shoot. And Joey while he was add it like to go all out with some colors also. I got my Golorgels out and started putting some complimentary colors on the spots.

Our Model Juna was changing out her daily’s into a body I asked her to bring to the shoot. Besides the fact a body is kind of sexy and Juna can certainly take that. A Body is also shows the movement in the shots hence they use it in dance so much.

Juna is the complete packidge, she’s absurdly beautifull looking, have a great body posture is super easy going and have machine like work ethics. She was just rocking the shoot. Unlike in other types of shoot the powder is somewhat like a estimated guess. So we dry-shot every photo like 10 times to do miner adjustments in the composition, light and to see everything is “in frame”. Normally this is easy to do but because of the movement in the poses and the fact they aren’t compact at all but large and wide it turned out to be quite a challenge. A balance act between the flattering 50-105mm and the 17-50mm. I can tell you if you want to use 50+ millimeters and still have the whole model in frame with this kind of shot, you beter have a very big-ass-studio-space I have a 7 meter wide studio and still used 35mm most of the time.

Overall it was a great shoot. Definitly looking forward working with Juna again.

African fashion

A month or so ago I posted a casting call for some African looking models. I really wanted to do a African Fashion type of shoot. It amazed me there where a lot of dark skinned models and almost none of them had done a African fashion type of shoot. They did European fashion shoots or something that is African but not fashion.

Of course I had a rough idea about what I wanted to do but, for me the team aspect is very important.  So I did what I always do, make a group chat. Turns out one of the models had already done some runway-work for a designer and after some calling we had two designers. One for the clothing and one for the jewelry.

We did some beauty shots for the jewelry and make-up and some fashion shots for the dresses and when we were finished we run around the building like idiots to collect all plants. Big one, small one it doesn’t matter to us.  I thought Africa, let’s make a kind of a jungle with them. In the studio I have an old chair so we put that in the middle, positioned plants around them and used a smoke generator (but forgot to tell the building security).
It was a super fun day shooting with good African Music to support the vibe. You know what pump up your sound to the max and open this song (Spotify)
Hope you feel the same vibes we did.

Jonne Dijkstra contacted me to do an awareness campaign for Waternet. Waternet is a company that manages water in Amsterdam. They manage the drinking water of many households and also the sewage system.

The awareness campaign focusses on young people to raise awareness of the usage / spilling of good quality drinking water. To connect to the younger audience of the campaign Jonne used the photo’s as a base to build here pop-art-style illustrations.

At the gym on the coffee table there was a huge flower piece. My first thought was “This must be on the head of a model”.
There was a card inside the piece and the next morning I called Actief Bloemsierkunst and explained to them who I am and asked if the could help me out.

I then searched online “flower crown” for some moodboard pictures to find a model and MUAH.

Well this is or interpretation of a flowercrown portrait. We made some nice footage at a URBEX location.

Black Noir originated in the 40’s till late 50’s. This film style expressed cynical attitudes and moody (lowkey) lighting.

The first week of January 2018 Erik shot a black noir inspired beauty shoot. Because Erik was in Emmen (Drenthe) at that time he used his mother’s apartment and redecorated the living into a small studiospace. For this he bought a venetian blind at the Praxis (Home Depo) for 12 euro. In the apartment, he found a ton of useful props like black vases and a gold retro lamp.

The basement/parking area of the apartment utilizes concrete walls and some nice light trough doors that gave some nice shadow patterns.
